Extracted memories feel compact one at a time, but years of goals, feelings, and family facts can become a second transcript. Repeating all of them wastes context and can force stale facts into unrelated conversations.
The memory system scores records using relevance, importance, recency, and emotional category. Only a limited set is formatted for the current request, and sensitive names are scrubbed from safe copies.
What was actually going wrong
Accumulation was mistaken for recall, so profile growth automatically meant prompt growth.
What I tried
- Appending every memory in chronological order
- Keeping only the newest memory regardless of topic
- Writing one giant profile summary that was never revised
Memories remain separate records and a capped scorer selects the best matches for each turn.
Why it worked
Old important facts can still surface, but irrelevant records do not consume the request budget.
The value of memory is selection, not volume.
